Morning Prayer August 31

Numbers 6:24-26

The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:

The Lord make His face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee;

The Lord lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

Here is one of the most beautiful blessings in the bible, these words were ordained by God and given to Moses. Moses then gave this prayer to Aaron, Arron gave the devotion to his priests, and the priests prayed this over the people of Israel.

This prayer is for everyone, divine instruction on receiving His blessing and your children as well.

In this day and age, we say things like, 'Don't work too hard.'

'Wouldn't it be so much more gracious to say, 'May the Lord Bless thee, and Keep thee.'

In this usage, the word 'bless' means: to kneel, but why would God kneel beside you?

When I was a young boy, I used to take Judo, and I remember my instructor was this huge man; he seemed so tall. As he was trying to teach me, he kneeled down in front of me, and was my height, I kneeled in front of him, and I was too short for him to instruct me. He smiled and said, "No, you stand." He had to bend down or come down to help me. He didn't get any smaller; he just knelt to my level to instruct me. His size and power didn't diminish, but he was able to teach me the correct way. He was so strong and skilled at Judo that he could have easily been a hedge beside me, 'and keep thee.'

The Lord make His face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee;

When you run into someone exceptional in your life, your face lights up with a smile, and it shines, you're joyful to see them; this is how God wants to see you.

The Lord lift up His countenance upon thee and give thee peace.

Countenance comes from the Hebrew word pânı̂ym. It's plural, but in this instance, it's used in singular form, as though all of His attention is focused towards you. It means favor and looking in your direction.

When God looks in your direction, He will give you:

Philippians 4:7

And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
